BIO:
Nynke van Zwol (1972) graduated from the Wackers Academy of Fine Art in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Before studying Art, she graduated in Linguistics and has worked for several years as a clinical and forensic linguist. Language has always been an important factor in her life and work.

Her fascination with ancient undeciphered scripts has led to the construction of her own asemic glyphs. The calligraphic forms are based on ancient scripts like cuneiform, linear a and runes. These glyphs are used in paintings and drawings.

Nynke also makes landscapes in watercolor. They are minimalist works where sky is divided from land or sea by a single line. They are portals to a world of possibilities, where the viewer has every room to dream. Their open interpretability is comparable to the asemic works.

Since starting as a fulltime artist Nynke has partaken in a number of exhibits. Her work has been shown in several museums and she is a regular exhibitor at the Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam. She is active in several artist collectives and is part of the international group of Women Asemic Writers.

Artist Statement:
Art is mystery to me. That’s why I love asemic script. Imagine that you found an ancient manuscript from a civilisation unknown, the endless possibilities of a text you cannot read... That mystery is what makes me make art.

My work opens a world that wasn’t there before. There are hints of landscape in these paintings and probably moons. But what world has those moons in its sky? What script is that and what does it tell us?

I immensely enjoy playing with the glyphs of my script. They do not reveal their secrets, not even to me. Is it even my script? Or is it an echo of the past or a glimpse of the future? You see, it’s a mystery.
